Sony studio, Queen Latifah, Will Smith — and Jada Pinkett Smith — think the new Oprah is Queen Latifah.
Sony announced Monday it is getting together with Latifah and Will Smith — and Jada Pinkett Smith — to produce a new syndicated daytime talk show that would star the rapper turned actress.
The show would not launch until the fall of 2013, in order to allow time for the thinning of the herd of would-be-New-Oprah’s — a herd that currently includes Anderson Cooper, Ricki Lake, Steve Harvey, Bethenny Frankel, and even Jeff Probst. Some of those daytime programs, including Katie’s, won’t be ready to launch until fall of ’12.
Latifah and Will Smith — and Jada Pinkett Smith — will exec produce the new talker, Sony said in its announcement — a complicated macedoine of names of companies owned by Latifah and Smith — and Jada Pinket Smith, and names of suits working at those companies who have also laid claim to exec-producer credit on the new show.
Latifah already had one at-bat hosting a talk show. But that one — The Queen Latifah Show,” produced with Warner Bros’ Telepictures — didn’t take, lasting just two seasons.
Sony noted in Monday’s news it has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with Will Smith — and Jada Pinkett Smith. Sony recently worked with them on the TNT series “Hawthorne,” which starred — Jada Pinkett Smith. And, Sony produced with them the “Karate Kid” remake, starring Jaden Smith, son of guess who?
There are currently two sequels in the works for Independence Day and Will Smith wants $50 million to reprise his role.
M Night Shyamalan is ready for One Thousand AEWhether Smith will return to ID4 remains uncertain, but he is in fact starring in M Night Shyamalan’s latest, One Thousand AE, which is being produced by Sony and will start shooting in February.
In fact, according to Variety, Smith is starring with his son Jaden Smith, playing, you guessed it, father and son.
They both crash land on earth a thousand years after all the humans have left, and Jaden has to find help when the crash injures his dad.
In recent years, Shyamalan’s star has faded, thanks to a lot of terrible, half-assed movies that didn’t live up to their initial premise. As we’ve reported here before, it’s very hard to stretch a Twilight Zone style premise out to feature length, and this crashould be a problem here as well, but AE has several things going for it.
Number one, Shyamalan didn’t write AE, it’s been written by Gary Whitta, who also wrote the well received Book of Eli, starring Denzel Washington. ??Stephen Gaghan, who penned Traffic, also took a pass at the script as well, and the fact that Shyamalan didn’t write it means less possibility of a wobbly premise that won’t pay off at the end. One would assume there’s going to be more people in the movie, but obviously Smith and Son will carry much of the film, although who knows what Jaden will run into when trying to save his dad.
It was also reported on Deadline that Shyamalan signed up with a new talent agency, moving from CAA to WME, so perhaps he’s looking to reinvent himself with this one. ??At least it’s not a spooky premise that takes place in Philadelphia, or maybe Will and Jaden will actually land on what used to be Philly a thousand years earlier…
Tuesday is a big day for NBA basketball fans in the city of Philadelphia. CSN has learned that a press conference called for Tuesday morning at the Palestra by the Sixers will introduce their new ownership led by multibillionaire Joshua Harris, who went to the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. (CSN and CSNPhilly.com will air the press conference live at 11:30 a.m.)
Last week, the NBA Board of Governors voted unanimously to approve the sale from Comcast-Spectacor to Harris’ group. Harris is one of three co-founders of Apollo Global Management, a private equity group.
“My partners and I are thrilled to have become owners of the Sixers,” Harris said in a statement released by the team Tuesday morning. “It is an honor to become part of this storied franchise. We have a lot of work to do, but we have a rich history, a strong foundation and a bright future.”
The group includes numerous investors, including Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. “West Philadelphia born and raised,” Will was born in Wynnefield and attended Overbrook High School. Read the rest of this entry »

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are teaming up for a small screen project. The high-profile couple, along with their business partner James Lassiter, has sold a multicamera comedy to ABC, The Hollywood Reporter says.
The untitled Romeo project has tapped singer Anthony Santos aka Romeo to star as a charismatic Dominican-American from Washington Heights. The show follows him as he tries to please his very traditional, immigrant father while also creating a life that reflects his new vision of the American Dream.
The father-son relationship is slightly based on Santos’ real-life relationship with his father, although the main character differs from the former lead singer of the Bachata group Aventura. Chris Pappas and Mike Bernier (“Unhitched”, “One Night Stan”) are on board to serve as writers and executive producers, while Will, Jada and Lassiter are listed as non-writing executive producers.
The Smiths have previously brought “The Karate Kid” and “The Secret Life of Bees” to the big screen and produced Broadway’s “Fela!”. Jada’s medical drama series “Hawthorne” which she was executive producing, however, was canceled by TNT in early September.

Willow Smith is tapping into several creative outlets, including dancing and songwriting. In fact, she just penned her very first song called ‘The Epiphany,’ and now she’s telling fans all about it in a brand-new video.
“That song is the first song I’ve ever written,” Willow says. “I’m not sure if I’m gonna put it on the album, but I just wanted you guys’ input in how it is because I’ve never really done this before. I’m very excited and I just want you guys to love it.”
The video shows Willow throughout the songwriting process, and explains how her love of both music and ballet inspired the song. The 10-year-old is currently working on her debut album, but there’s no word on when it will arrive in stores.
